The Holiday Season, Your Wedding, and YOU!

Tips for Planning a Wedding Around the Christmas Season

If you’re planning a wedding around Christmas, congratulations—you’re blending two of the most joyous celebrations into one unforgettable event! But let’s be honest, planning a wedding during this magical (and sometimes chaotic) season can be a sleigh ride through a snowstorm if you’re not prepared. Don’t worry—I’m here to help you navigate it all like a pro.

1. Embrace the Season, But Don’t Overdo It

Christmas weddings can be dreamy, but there’s a fine line between elegant and “Santa’s workshop exploded.” Think subtle nods to the holiday season: greenery garlands, metallic accents, or soft candlelight. Incorporate classic wintery hues like deep reds, emerald greens, or icy blues, but balance them with neutrals to avoid your wedding looking too theme-y.

Want a festive touch? Consider ornaments as place cards or a hot cocoa station for guests to warm up. Your wedding should feel timeless, with a sprinkle of seasonal charm.

2. Book Vendors Early—Like, Yesterday

The holiday season is notoriously busy for everyone, including venues, caterers, and photographers. Between office parties, holiday dinners, and family vacations, their calendars fill up fast. Once you’ve nailed down your date, start securing your dream team immediately.

Also, be prepared for higher costs—peak season pricing may apply. Keep that in mind when budgeting for your big day.

3. Consider the Weather and Travel

Whether you're planning a white winter wedding or celebrating in a warmer climate, weather can be unpredictable. If snow or rain is a possibility, work with your venue to create a contingency plan for photos or outdoor elements.

For your out-of-town guests, remember that holiday travel can be expensive and stressful. Provide a “save the date” as early as possible and recommend accommodations in advance to lock in availability.

4. Holiday Décor Is Your Friend

One perk of a Christmas-season wedding? Many venues will already be decorated! Gorgeous wreaths, twinkling lights, and decked-out trees might already be in place, saving you time and money. Be sure to coordinate with the venue to ensure their décor aligns with your vision—after all, you don’t want clashing color schemes or an inflatable Santa stealing the spotlight.

5. Thoughtful Scheduling Is Key

If your wedding is close to Christmas or New Year’s, be mindful of your guests’ commitments. A weekday wedding might work better to avoid competing with holiday parties. Alternatively, plan your celebration earlier in December to give everyone a breather before the holiday frenzy kicks in.

6. Add Seasonal Surprises

The holidays are all about cozy vibes and heartwarming traditions, so why not weave those into your big day? Serve mulled wine or spiced cider during cocktail hour. Instead of traditional wedding favors, gift your guests ornaments or holiday cookies. You could even incorporate a holiday song into your ceremony or reception (just resist the urge to let “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” make the playlist).

7. Plan for a Holiday Honeymoon

If you’re heading off on a honeymoon right after your wedding, keep in mind that holiday travel can be hectic. Book your flights and accommodations early, and consider avoiding popular destinations that might be overcrowded with holiday travelers. A cozy cabin in the mountains or a relaxing tropical escape could be just the ticket.

8. Stay Flexible and Enjoy the Magic

The holidays are unpredictable, and that’s part of their charm. Things might not go exactly as planned (hello, last-minute guest cancellations or unexpected snowstorms), but lean into the season’s spirit of joy and togetherness. Ultimately, your wedding is about celebrating love, and there’s no better time to do that than during the most wonderful time of the year.

So, whether you’re walking down the aisle to “O Holy Night” or hosting a winter wonderland soirée, embrace the magic, and make your Christmas wedding uniquely yours. After all, love is the greatest gift of all.

Happy planning and happy holidays!
